Mosquitoes on the Rise: 21 Species Now Spotted Across Scotland — Even in the Far North

Mosquitoes are rapidly expanding their reach across the UK, with Scotland now home to 21 different species—some of which are actively targeting humans. Researchers from the Mosquito Scotland project have raised alarms as reports pour in from across the country, including over 700 submissions of photos and sightings within the past year alone.

More than half of those submissions have been confirmed, revealing a growing mosquito population that’s adapting to the changing climate. Shockingly, some species have even been identified as far north as Shetland—the most northerly location where mosquitoes have ever been documented in the UK. Scientists warn that these biting insects are no longer a rare nuisance, but a spreading concern worthy of closer attention.
